Specialty contact lenses in Baltimore, Maryland

Contact lenses for eyes a standard lens can't fit

Your eye doctor sent you here, or you want a second look at your lenses. Dr. Taras Kovalenko fits scleral, corneal, toric and multifocal lenses one eye at a time, and writes to your doctor after every visit.

Who we fit

Conditions that send patients to us

Each of these changes how light enters the eye, and a standard lens often can't sit on it comfortably. Your doctor's referral tells us what they found. We measure the rest.

  • The cornea thins and steepens into a cone, and glasses stop sharpening vision. Firm and scleral lenses give the eye a smoother surface to see through.

  • We fit lenses once the doctor who did your transplant says the eye is ready, and we co-manage with them. They hear from us after each visit.

  • A scar or an old injury can leave the front of the eye uneven. A custom lens evens out the surface the eye sees through.

  • Scleral lenses hold a pool of saline over the cornea all day. They aren't right for everyone, so we check the eye first.

  • When the prescription is far outside what stock lenses cover, we order lenses made to your measurements.

  • Multifocal and toric lenses, fitted with trial lenses and adjusted until near and far both work for your day.

After every visit

Your doctor stays in the loop

Most patients come to us on a referral. After each visit we send your doctor a short letter: what we measured, which lenses we fitted and what comes next.

You keep your own doctor for routine eye exams and any care for eye disease. We fit and follow lenses, and we call your doctor's office when something we see is theirs to look at.

  • A written summary after every visit

  • Questions from your doctor answered by phone

  • Your records kept private, shared only as the law allows

How a fitting goes

Five steps from referral to lenses you wear all day

Every fit starts with measurements and ends with a plan for the next check.

  • 01

    Your records arrive

Your doctor sends what they have, or you bring it. We read it before you come in.

  • 02

    Measurement visit

We map the shape of the front of each eye and check eye health. About 90 minutes.

  • 03

    Trial lenses

You try lenses chosen from the measurements. We watch how each sits, moves and feels, and change what needs changing that day.

  • 04

    Lens pickup and handling lesson

Custom lenses arrive in a week or two. We teach insertion, removal and cleaning until you're confident.

  • 05

    Follow-up on a set schedule

The checks in the table below, each with a letter to your doctor. Adjustments are part of the fit.

Before you book

Questions patients and doctors ask first

Do I need a referral?

Most patients come to us on one, and your own eye doctor can send it with your records. If you don't have a referral, call us. We'll ask for the name of your eye doctor so we can write to them after your visit.

Will I still see my own eye doctor?

Yes. We fit lenses and check how your eyes handle them. Your own doctor keeps your routine eye exams and any care for eye disease, and we send a letter after each visit so both of us work from the same notes.

How long is the first visit?

About 90 minutes. Later checks are shorter, usually about 30 minutes. Your dates are set at the first visit, and the schedule above is the usual rhythm.

Who pays for the visit?

Some visits go to medical insurance, some to a vision plan, and some are paid by you. How fees work explains which is which, and we check your benefits before your first visit.

Can I fill my prescription somewhere else?

Yes. Your prescription is yours. We give you a copy after your exam and fitting, and you can fill it anywhere.

What if lenses don't work out for my eyes?

We adjust the fit and try another design before we call it done. If lenses aren't the right answer, we tell you early and let your doctor know what we found.
